Good Samaritan

After class Chris always takes the subway to the Harvard Square stop where I pick him up. Last Wednesday evening, I waited and waited for him - over twenty minutes passed and still no Chris. He finally walked out of the station, a little grimy and with a stink about him. Apparently, while Chris was standing by the tracks at Park Street to change trains, a homeless man swayed and fell face-first down into the wells. Meanwhile, the headlamps from an oncoming train were getting bigger and bigger, but Chris and another guy still jumped down right away and hoisted the unconscious man up. I guess people were screaming and flagging the train to stop (it eventally did). Anyway, after medical personnel arrived, Chris took the next train and eventually arrived at Harvard Square, his nice overcoat sloshed with milkshake and thrown-away food that the homeless man had stuffed into his clothing. I think if Chris had stuck around, he would have been interviewed on the news. But he didn't - such a humble hero.
